Ogoninews.com is online news channel dedicated to promote peace, development and the human rights struggles of the Ogoni people2009, a rich and naturally endowed minority located in South Eastern Nigeria.


History

The website was founded in 2010. Its management has severally changed due to its deployment as a platform for the environmental and human rights struggles for the Ogoni people.

News Sources

Ogoninews.com publishes press statements, opinions and published content related to Ogoni, freedom and human rights struggles. Most of the content are sent to Ogoninews in press statements, by This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or exist as published works from other sources. One major source of content on Ogoninews.com is the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples' Organization (UNPO), an organization to which the Ogoni people, represented by MOSOP, are a member.

In 2011, an update on the website affected its caching capabilities and the website was disabled due to the vulnerabilities which led to a DDoS attack.


Ogoninews and Environmental Struggles of the Ogoni People

In 2016, Ogoninews.com became the official news channel of MOSOP.

The people of Ogoni had become known for their human and environmental rights struggles in Nigeria. The struggle attracted global attention when on November 10, 1995, leader of MOSOP, Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight others were hanged by the Nigerian Government during the regime of late General Sani Abacha. This was followed with state-backed persecution of the Ogoni people which eventually led to the killing of an estimated 4,000 people.
