Stakeholders urge FG to build gas turbines in Ogoni

Key stakeholders in Ogoni have appealed to the Federal Government to construct gas turbines to generate power for Ogoni, seeking a reliable and sustainable solution to their long-standing electricity woes.

The call is expected to harness the region’s abundant gas resources, promote economic growth and improve the overall well-being of the communities.

They also demanded a review of the Ogoni Power Project, saying that the project should be made an off-grid power generation and distribution project since Ogoni is highly endowed with natural gas.

They also urged the Federal Government to convert the ongoing construction of the Centre of Excellence for Environmental Remediation into Ogoni University of Environment, as well as the reduction in government bureaucracy to enable the Hydrocarbon Pollution and Remediation Project (HYPREP) to fast-track the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report implementation in Ogoni.

During a project review meeting with Ogoni key stakeholders in Port Harcourt, yesterday, the HYPREP faced pressing concerns from Ogoni people.

The paramount ruler of the ancient Barako Community, His Royal Highness, Kadilo Kabari, emphasised the need to harness Ogoni land’s abundant natural gas for electricity generation, which would benefit Ogoni people.

In a show of support, they passed a vote of confidence in Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, urging the government to allow him to continue driving the project forward
